Bridging Roles and Cities – Photography for the MDDUS Annual Report 2024

I love it when a long-term collaboration allows creative ideas to evolve year after year. This is now the fourth consecutive year I’ve worked with the MDDUS communications team to produce the photography for their Annual Report. Each year brings a fresh challenge and a new visual concept.

For the 2024 report, the team came to me with a strong theme centred on connection—across roles, departments, and cities. Our aim was to reflect the breadth and unity of the organisation through portraits of its people. The result is a series of location-based images, highlighting the individuals behind MDDUS, and the places that define their work.

From Millennium Bridge to Squiggly Bridge

MDDUS has offices in both London and Glasgow. So we planned two portrait sessions, each drawing on the character of their respective cities. In London, I photographed staff on the Millennium Bridge with St Paul’s Cathedral providing a striking, iconic backdrop. It was an ideal setting for the London team and a strong visual anchor for the theme.

In Glasgow, we used two very different river crossings—the elegant South Portland Street Suspension Bridge, with its Victorian engineering, and the modern Squiggly Bridge—to represent the dynamism and heritage of the city. The blend of old and new mirrored the range of experience and innovation within MDDUS itself.

As always, it was a collaborative process. The comms team had a clear vision for the mood and message of the images. Then together we worked out how best to bring that to life in photography—striking the right balance between professionalism, approachability, and visual continuity across two locations.

It’s a privilege to help tell the story of an organisation through the faces of its people, and a pleasure to work again with such a thoughtful and creative team.
