Law firm Headshots in Edinburgh
Winn Solicitors found me through LinkedIn and got in touch needing law firm headshots for 27 people in their Edinburgh office. The brief was straightforward — no white backdrop, something with a bit of character. The location turned out to be a bit of a curve ball.
The building had other ideas
Their offices occupy a Georgian building between George Street and Queen Street in a maze of narrow cobbled streets. Low ceilings, small rooms, narrow doorways, winding staircase, almost no natural light. Not the ideal location for a law firm headshot day. Ideally, I’d be looking for space around the subject to position the lights and a quiet corner away from the full glare of the rest of the staff.

The staircase turned out to be the best and only option — character in the background, enough height to work with studio lighting, and a natural frame that showed the character of the building. The second setup was outside on the pavement in natural light, which Edinburgh delivered in abundance on the day.
In practice this meant blocking the main corridor of a busy working law firm for the best part of a day. Soft-boxes at head height that colleagues had to duck under between shots. 27 people fitting a portrait session around their actual jobs. Everyone was good-humoured about it and the whole thing moved along at a happy pace. I was shooting tethered so everyone had a chance to choose their favourite photos there and then.
Feedback from the client: ‘Great to meet you – The photographs are great’…… so worth blocking the corridor for.
